Management and selection of shelves

Time:2025-10-16 Read:19

The goal of optimizing shelf management is to make high-performance products easy to see, find, and select. The basic principle is to allocate the shelf area ratio of products as closely as possible to match market share. There are several specific aspects:

1. Product style selection. What products and related brands should be placed on the shelves. Generally determined based on category roles: the products and related brands of the target category should occupy the highest cubic space, have the highest foot traffic, and be prominently and easily visible; General categories should be located in high cube spaces and high foot traffic areas; Seasonal contingency categories should be located in areas with general cubic space and average passenger flow; Convenience category placement in low cube space and remaining store space. In this way, placing important product categories in prominent positions can attract consumers' attention, increase their interest in choosing products, stimulate their desire to purchase, and store shelves.

2. Product placement method. Overall, the placement method should consider: the visual effect of the shelves is generally near the horizontal line of sight and within reach, which results in better sales performance; The height of product display has a decisive impact on sales, and the ideal height is generally 80 to 130 centimeters from the ground; The price tags for displaying products should be easy to refer to, in order to assist consumers in obtaining price information and facilitate product supplementation and display; Proper use of shelf cards can enhance promotional effectiveness.

3. Product placement space. Refers to how much shelf space each product and related brand should occupy. There are three methods for measuring shelf space: flat space, three-dimensional space, and area space. The allocation of product space should be based on the performance of the product, so that its space is proportional to sales volume. For products with poor sales, their space should be reduced to give way to products with better performance. For example, each of the three shampoos, Piaoluo, Pantene, and Head&Shoulders, occupies one shelf board, which means they all occupy 33.33% of the space. However, due to the outstanding performance of Piaoluo, with sales far exceeding those of Pantene and Head&Shoulders, its shelf space should obviously be increased. So the new shelf space allocation can be 66.66% for Piaoluo, and half for Pantene and Head&Shoulders.

Tips for selecting shelves

The self weight of the goods enables the first in and last out of palletized goods, with the same side in and out. It is suitable for storing large quantities of goods with few varieties, with high space utilization and flexible and convenient access. The total depth of the shelf should not be too deep, generally within 5 pallet depths, otherwise it will sacrifice a lot of space due to the mutual embedding of pallet carts. The weight of a single pallet of goods is generally within 1500kg, and the height of the shelves is generally within 6m. This type of system requires high manufacturing accuracy for the shelves, and the coordination between the pallet trolley and the guide rail is particularly important. If the manufacturing and installation accuracy is not high, it can easily lead to poor operation of the shelf system. This type of shelf has a relatively high cost and has been widely used in China. 8. Narrow aisle crossbeam shelving (VNA) is a type of crossbeam shelving that is equipped with guide rails for three-way forklifts on both sides of the aisle. Its characteristic is that the width of the aisle is small, which increases the utilization of storage space and allows for faster storage and retrieval of goods. The channel of narrow aisle shelves is only slightly wider than pallets, inheriting the characteristics of selective shelves that do not have strict requirements for pallet storage layout. It can fully utilize the warehouse area and height, and has a medium storage density. However, narrow aisle shelves require special forklifts or cranes for storage and retrieval operations, as well as other handling machinery, resulting in longer turnover times compared to traditional shelves. Due to the fact that shelves not only have the function of storing pallets, but also the function of supporting and reinforcing handling equipment, the requirements for structural strength and tolerance fit are extremely strict, and must be comprehensively considered, accurately designed, and installed. Narrow aisle shelves can also be integrated with a temporary storage platform for goods, greatly improving storage efficiency. 9. Steel structure platform Steel structure platform is usually a fully assembled steel structure platform with two or three floors built on the existing workshop (warehouse) site, which changes the usage space from one floor to two or three floors, making full use of the space. The goods are transported to the second and third floors by forklifts or elevators, and then transported to the designated location by small cars or hydraulic trailer trucks. Compared with reinforced concrete platforms, this type of platform has the advantages of fast construction, moderate cost, easy installation and disassembly, and can be easily used. Its structure is novel and beautiful. The spacing between the columns of this platform is usually within 4-6m. The first floor is about 3m high, and the second and third floors are about 2.5m high. The columns are usually made of square or round pipes, and the main and auxiliary beams are usually made of H-shaped steel. The floor panels are usually cold-rolled steel floor slabs, patterned steel floor slabs, steel grilles, etc. The floor load is usually within 1000kg per square meter. This type of platform allows for the closest integration of warehousing and management, with dense cabinets that can be used as warehouse offices upstairs or downstairs. This type of system is used in various industries such as third-party logistics and mechanical manufacturing. 10. Cantilever shelving Cantilever shelving is mainly used to store long materials such as profiles, pipes, plates, cables, etc. The columns are mostly made of H-shaped steel or cold-rolled steel, and the cantilevers are made of square tubes, cold-rolled steel or H-shaped steel. The cantilevers are connected to the columns by plug-in or bolt connections, and the bases are connected to the columns by bolt connections. The bases are made of cold-rolled steel or H-shaped steel. Goods storage and retrieval are carried out by forklifts, cranes, or manual labor. The shelf height is usually within 2.5 meters (up to 6 meters if accessed by a forklift), the cantilever length is within 1.5 meters, and the load capacity per arm is usually within 1000kg. This type of shelf is mostly used in the mechanical manufacturing industry and building materials supermarkets. 11. Fluent shelves are usually evolved from medium-sized crossbeam shelves, with roller type aluminum alloy or sheet metal flow bars placed between the front and rear crossbeams of each layer of the shelf at a certain slope (about 3 °). Goods are usually packaged in paper or placed in plastic turnover boxes, utilizing their own weight to achieve flow and first in, first out. Goods are transported by small cars and manually accessed for convenient access. The load capacity of each layer of the unit shelf is usually within 1000kg, and the shelf height is within 2.5 meters. Suitable for process conversion on both sides of assembly lines, picking operations in distribution centers, etc., electronic tags can be used to achieve information management of goods. KUN YU 12. Drawer style shelving evolved from heavy-duty pallet shelving and is typically used to store heavy objects such as molds, but there are no suitable forklifts available on site. Combination assembly, bolt connected shelf structure, shelf height is generally below 2.5m, and several layers except for the top layer can be designed and made into drawer style combination.
